One of the best ways to prep your skin for the change in seasons is with DIY scrubs. They’re inexpensive, easy to make and fun to use for soft, smooth skin. There is no reason to go out and buy pricey exfoliators when you can easily make your very own body scrub with the ingredients of your choosing and customize it to suit your personal skin care needs. So why not treat your skin to a good exfoliating treatment this weekend with one of these DIY scrubs!
LUXURIOUS SUGAR SCRUB
One of the best things about DIY scrubs is that you can whip up a variety of body scrubs with just a few ingredients. Take this sugar scrub for instance, you only need three ingredients and you’ve got a natural yet effective scrub that you can use on your body or face to reveal fresh, smooth skin you’ll love to show off in the warmer weather.
2 parts white or brown sugar
1 part coconut or olive oil
½ teaspoon of Vitamin E oil or the gel from a Vitamin E capsule
Directions: Mix well and enjoy!
BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUB
This next body scrub sound good enough to eat, doesn’t it? It makes use of those overripe bananas that are too mushy to eat, but we feel bad throwing away but we can feel really good about using this scrub! All you need is a banana, some sugar and vanilla extract or any essential oil that you like and you’ve got yourself a sweet, sugary treat without the sugar crash.
1 soft, ripe banana
2-3 tablespoons of sugar
Few drops of vanilla extract or essential oil
Directions: Grab a fork and smash the banana until it’s a chunky consistency. Next, add the sugar and vanilla extract or essential oil. If you want to use this recipe on your face, use only the mashed banana and no sugar.
TOMATO AND SUGAR FACIAL SCRUB
Even if you don’t like eating tomatoes, they make an amazing ingredient for a facial scrub. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which has been found to improve cellular skin function and smooth out skin. The sugar helps exfoliate your skin and helps release the lycopene from the tomato when used together. Quick, easy and no suspicious chemicals!
½ cup of white sugar
Directions: Take the tomato and carefully slice off the top with a knife. Place the sugar in a bowl or plate and dip the tomato in the sugar. Using small, circular motions, use the sugar coated tomato to gently exfoliate your entire face avoiding the eye area. Leave the sugar and tomato juice on your face for about 10 minutes, then rinse off. Do not use this if you’re allergic to tomatoes.
CINNAMON SUGAR LIP SCRUB
Lips can also benefit from a gentle scrubbing every now and then. If you’re not a fan of using a soft toothbrush or wash cloth to exfoliate your lips, this is a sweet and spicy scrub you’re going to adore! With just three kitchen staples, you can slough off dead skin cells and reveal super smooth lips to rock your favorite lip color.
1 part coconut oil
1 part white sugar
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
Directions: Mix the sugar and coconut oil together first, then add in cinnamon. Mix well and apply to lips. Gently scrub using circular motions and rinse off.
CITRUS SALT SCRUB
Sugar scrubs are nice and all, but sometimes a coarse sea salt scrub with a refreshing citrus scent is just what you need to help wake up your senses. This is perfect to use in your morning shower to help get you going for the day or anytime you need a little pep in your step.
½ cup coarse sea salt
½ cup of coconut or olive oil
1-1 ½ teaspoon of lemon or orange zest (or a mix of both)
Directions: Combine all ingredients together.
HOMEMADE HAND SCRUB
Our hands often take a beating and aside from some lotion, they don’t get much love or attention. Pamper your hands with this easy DIY scrub to slough off any dry, flaky skin from the winter. It’s a quick, easy way to get softer, smoother hands.
¼ cup sea salt
¼ cup of white sugar
1-2 tablespoons raw honey
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions: Combine the honey and coconut oil in a bowl and mix well. In a separate bowl, combine sea salt, sugar and lemon juice until it’s crumbly. Combine the contents of the two bowls. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator.
PEPPERMINT FOOT SCRUB
Get your feet ready for sandal season with this fragrant foot scrub! Peppermint is such an invigorating scent and it’s commonly used in foot lotions and treatments due to the slight tingling sensation it leaves behind. If you’re on your feet all day or just want to pamper your feet, this is an easy and effective scrub that your feet won’t get enough of.
1 cup of Epsom salt or sea salt
¼ cup of oil of your choice (olive, coconut, avocado)
Peppermint essential oil
1 tablespoon of peppermint leaves (optional). If you don’t have peppermint leaves on hand, you can use a tablespoon of peppermint tea leaves from peppermint tea.
Directions: Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Use immediately or pour contents into a jar and refrigerate.
RED BUMP ERASER SCRUB
Do you have red bumps on your arms? I’m very familiar with this skin condition, also known as keratosis pilaris, and this scrub used consistently is said to treat those red bumps. The creator of this recipe emphasizes using this scrub every time you shower, but if you think it’s too much for your skin, try using it every other day and your skin should be smoother with less redness.
Plastic Kerr jar
1 cup of white sugar
Avocado or olive oil
Essential oil of your choice
Directions: Fill up the jar with the sugar until it is about one inch from the top. Pour in oil up to the top, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to add a nice fragrance and shake well.
NO NONSENSE DAILY SCRUB FOR ANY SKIN TYPE
This is another simple DIY scrub recipe for smooth skin that anyone can use and keeps for a long time. You’re basically combining ground oats and ground almond meal together and then adding water or other liquid whenever you feel like using it so you don’t have to worry about refrigerating. Bring out your natural beauty with this natural scrub.
½ cup of finely ground oatmeal
½ cup of finely ground almond meal
Water or rosewater (You can also use witch hazel for oily skin or milk for dry skin. You’ll only add the liquid when you’re going to use the scrub)
Directions: Grind oats and almond meal separately and then combine together in a container. When you’re ready to use, take about a ½ tablespoon of the dry ingredients and add a small amount of your liquid of choice, allowing the oats to soak before you apply it to your face. Gently scrub your face and rinse off with warm water.
